Gift Exchange and Workers’ Fairness Concerns: When Equality Is Unfair

Gift Exchange and Workers’ Fairness Concerns: When Equality Is Unfair We study how different payment modes influence the effectiveness of gift exchange as a contract enforcement device. In particular, we analyze how horizontal fairness concerns affect performance and efficiency in an environment characterized by contractual incompleteness. In our experiment, one principal is matched with two agents. The principal pays equal wages in one treatment and can set individual wages in the other. We find that the use of equal wages elicits substantially lower efforts. This is not caused by monetary incentives per se since under both wage schemes it is profit-maximizing for agents to exert high efforts. The treatment difference instead seems to be driven by the fact that the norm of equity is violated far more frequently in the equal wage treatment. After having suffered from violations of the equity principle, agents withdraw effort. These findings hold even after controlling for the role of intentions, as we show in a third treatment. Our results suggest that adherence to the norm of equity is a necessary prerequisite for successful establishment of gift-exchange relations. JEL Classification: J33, D63, M52, C92, J41

Social preferences or personal career concerns? Field evidence on positive and negative reciprocity in the workplace
This paper provides non-experimental field evidence on positive and negative worker reciprocity. We analyze the performance reactions of professional workers to fair and unfair wage allocations in their natural environment. The objects of interest are professional soccer players in the German Bundesliga. This environment enables us to circumvent the main problems of observational studies on rec...
متن کاملPay Growth, Fairness and Job Satisfaction: Implications for Nominal and Real Wage Rigidity
Theories of wage rigidity often rely on a positive relationship between pay changes and utility, arising from concern for fairness or gift exchange. Supportive evidence has emerged from laboratory experiments, but the link has not yet been established with field data. This paper contributes a first step, using representative British data. Workers care about the level and the growth of earnings....
متن کاملApplying Fairness Theories to Financial Decision Making
This paper explores the role of fairness in consumer financial decisions. Specifically, we investigate how consumers’ perceptions of fairness for financial products can influence their willingness to purchase those products. In doing so, we also consider why perceptions of fairness for financial decisions are different from fairness concerns for other types of consumer products. We also explore...
متن کاملA Model of Reciprocal Fairness: Application to the Labour Contract
We investigate to what extent reciprocity, exhibited by employers and employees, lead to stable gift exchange practices in the labour contract, giving rise to noncompensating wage differentials among industries and firms. We use the concept of Sequential Reciprocity Equilibrium (Dufwenberg and Kirchsteiger 1998, 2004) to incorporate players’ preferences for reciprocity in their utility function...
متن کاملFairness versus Efficiency
Fairness is a strong concern as shown by dictator and ultimatum experiments. Efficiency, measured by the sum of individual payoffs, is a potentially competing concern in games such as the prisoners’ dilemma. In our experiment participants can increase efficiency by gift giving. In the one-sided treatment this is only possible for one of the two partners. The two-sided treatment allows for mutua...
